Bayfield, Wis.-Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake will provide the backdrop for the Aquaculture Field Day and Vendor Fair at the Bayfield Pavilion and the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility in Red Cliff on June 12.

Current and future fish farmers with an interest in learning about new techniques or the latest in aquaculture research, veterinarians with aquaculture practices, and agriculture and natural resource field technicians will come together at the event which includes two sessions--one in the morning in Bayfield and an afternoon session in Red Cliff at the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility.

The morning sessions will include "Sample testing on the Farm"; "Importance of Nutrition/Factors in the Current Cost of Feeds"; "Weed Control for Ponds"; "Research Updates from the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility"; and "Aquaculture Extension Updates." The afternoon sessions are practical skill stations including water quality, aeration, fish sampling and grading, and larval feeding. Aquaculture vendors will be on site with information about their equipment and services.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Jane Mussey, USDA APHIS veterinary medical officer; Rick Decker, district manager, Purina Mills, LLC; Jim Held, aquaculture outreach specialist; Bob Robinson, director of sales and marketing, Kasco Marine Inc.; and Greg Fischer, facility manager at the demonstration facility. UW-Extension aquaculture specialists Ron Johnson and Sarah Kaatz will give updates on UW-Extension's work and help demonstrate ways to measure water quality.

The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association Board and Wisconsin Aquaculture Industry Advisory Council will hold their quarterly meeting the following day, June 13, in Bayfield.

Aquaculture Field Day is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility, the University of Wisconsin-Extension, and the UW-Madison Aqua Program, along with the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Registration for the all day workshop is $50, which includes breaks, lunch and handout materials. An optional boat cruise through the Apostle Islands in the evening is not included in the workshop fee.
