The newest episode of The Wisconsin Gardener, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15. Producer and Host Shelley Ryan travels to several Wisconsin locations to examine interesting new plants, as well as some risks to plant life. An encore airs at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17.

At Bailey’s Harbor, Caleb Whitney of Greenside Up introduces Ryan to Tillandsias. They are often called air plants because they do not require soil to grow. These plants offer endless design possibilities and grow anywhere.

In visiting the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, Ryan investigates the problem of emerald ash borers –– a risk to ash trees throughout Wisconsin. University of Wisconsin-Extension Woody Ornamental Specialist, Dr. Laura Jull, lists some helpful suggestions such as planting other kinds of trees that cannot be harmed by this menace. Her favorites include the Kentucky Coffeetree, the Frontier Elm and the Baldcypress.

Ryan travels to Troy Gardens and receives helpful plant suggestions for this season. Susan Boldt of the Madison chapter of the Slow Food Movement discusses some special fruits and vegetables, as well as some animals, meat and beverages that deserve recognition.

At the Military Ridge Bike Trail, Ryan explores the dangers of poison ivy with Judy Reith-Rozelle, the assistant superintendent at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station. Poison ivy is present in all seasons, with shiny green leaves in the summer and white berries in the winter. It comes in many forms and can even climb up trees like a vine. Ryan shows viewers what poison ivy looks like and explains what to do if you find it in your yard.

Major funding for The Wisconsin Gardener is provided by Fiskars Garden & Outdoor Living.
