Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) today announced that a record 5,000 children are being served with the First Book project, which began its new year in September with the reading selection "Ten, Nine, Eight" by Molly Bang.

Reilly on Thursday will present 20 awards to individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the UW-Extension and Wisconsin¿s people this past year. Recipients will accept their awards at UW-Extension¿s Annual Awards Banquet at The Lowell Center on the UW-Madison campus.

Wisconsin's natural resources make the state an ideal place for outdoor recreation. When you hike, camp, hunt, fish or spend time outdoors, it is possible to encounter plants or animals that might cause problems. While poisonous plants, wild animals, and swarms of biting insects do exist in Wisconsin, the risk of meeting them is actually quite low. In most cases, you can avoid these natural hazards all together, or handle them easily.

- Using chain saws safely

Homeowners and small woodland owners routinely use chain saws for trimming trees and cutting firewood. Although chain saws are easy to use, they can be dangerous in inexperienced hands. Mark Rickenbach, UW-Madison/Extension forest ecology and management specialist, recommends that property owners go through safety training in order to avoid injury.

Not long after College for Kids drew to a close in August, four Milwaukee-area children ranging in age from 7-12 expressed outright enthusiasm for the program that drew over 1,200 youth to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus this summer.

Legend has it that back in 1927 Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) host Harold B. McCarty had a radio guest cancel at the last minute. He had to fill the time with something, so he pulled a library book out of his briefcase and started reading--and unknowingly began one of the longest-running programs in the history of radio.
