- New compacts for shared services to impact Wisconsin communities

As many as 20 Wisconsin counties, 300 cities and villages and 500 towns are affected by a new state requirement that local governments share services with other local governments. This requirement could affect how long term state shared revenues are distributed and is the subject of a Wisconsin Counties Association educational seminar for elected and appointed county officials. The seminar on Consolidation and Service Coordination will focus on countywide service agreements and will take place July 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Sheraton Madison Hotel, 706 John Nolen Drive in Madison. Representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Extension Local Government Center, UW-La Crosse, and a Milwaukee law firm will be the featured speakers.

As celebrations and county events fill the summer months, University of Wisconsin-Madison/Extension food scientist, Barbara Ingham reminds consumers that outdoor food gatherings will be safer if picnickers keep hands washed and pay attention to basic food safety. Foodborne illnesses resulting from cross-contamination rise during this season where food is often consumed away from home.

- Nationwide disaster network helps Wisconsin communities

Recent heavy rains in central Wisconsin resulted in the declaration of a seven county federal disaster area. Some communities received as much as 14 inches of rain in one week, closing roads and damaging millions of dollars in crops. Meanwhile, in northwestern Wisconsin, residents of Siren were remembering last June when a devastating tornado leveled the town, killing three people. University of Wisconsin-Extension plays an important role in helping Wisconsin communities deal with such devastating events.
