This position operates in cooperation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) – Divisions of Forestry and Water. This project position works under the direct supervision of the Director of Information Technology Operations and will independently perform the primary duties of Network Architect, Data Center Coordinator, and Security Officer. This one-year appointment may be renewed annually up to four years or become a permanent position.
This position is part of the Central Information Technology division for the UW Colleges and UW-Extension, which is a newly formed unit responsible for integration of technical requirements for the 13 (2-year) UW Colleges, the decentralized UW- Extension divisions, and central administration.
Integration efforts include merging two distinct and physically separate networks where parallels exist, and sustaining disparate solutions where required. The design and build out of the new infrastructure must incorporate best practices to deliver a secure fault-tolerant product. Technologies for the new environment include virtualization, a Storage Area Network (SN), and blade servers. The 544 sq. ft. facility for the new data center is located on the UW Madison campus and utilizes a state-of-the-art APC rack cooling system.
This position is responsible for analyzing power, cooling, weight, and capacity of the data center. The position also recommends policy, procedures, and compliance with state and federal regulations. Other duties include maintaining the Cisco firewall environment and VPN network, maintaining the packet-shaping solution, maintaining the virus protection system from a security standpoint, maintaining the systems management system, and maintaining and auditing the public VPN Server.
General requirements are work experience in some aspect of IT infrastructure security, MS Windows servers, Linux Servers, web server environments, virtualization, Cisco firewall configuration, computer forensics, and network architecture.
