About CNREDAbout Us

What is CNRED?

Community, Natural Resource and Economic Development (or CNRED) is a program within Cooperative Extension, a division of University of Wisconsin-Extension. CNRED is Wisconsin’s educational network serving people and their communities in seeking positive change.

CNRED programs share a common goal reflected in our commitment to community development.  Our outreach programs, research and overall assistance involves people, communities, and organizations in educational experiences that teach them to apply appropriate knowledge and technology to the problems of the day. CNRED programs deal with communities as well as the people and resources within them.

Backed by University of Wisconsin research, CNRED educators work in partnership with people in county, state, federal, and tribal governments; community organizations; volunteers; business; and industry. With faculty in every county and on UW-campuses, CNRED gives Wisconsin citizens access to University research and knowledge in:

Leadership and Organizational Development
Bringing services that facilitate collaboration, local leadership development and community-based problem-solving.

Strengthening Local Government
Providing educational resources for civic engagement and partnerships in local government decision-making.

Natural Resources
Providing education in environmental protection, energy management and land use.

Economic Development
Enhancing local economic health, business development, stable employment and quality of life.

CNRED educational programs support community goals, including:

  • local leadership training
  • economic development
  • public policy issues
  • natural resources protection
  • land-use planning
  • shared decision-making & consensus building
  • access to information technologies

What People Say About Us

"One of the most important features of the university’s role in our land use plan was the emphasis on the process of meaningful public involvement. It helped us fill in a lot of questions. This process would never have occurred without the university connection.”
-- Bruce Haukoum, Jefferson County zoning administrator, on development of a comprehensive, county-wide land use plan.

“As a result of attending UW-Extension’s Restoring Shoreland Habitats workshop, I will be planting small shrubs and trees along the bank of my lakefront property. Shoreline vegetation creates a buffer zone to protect the quality of the water.”
-- Len Syberth, New Auburn

“UW-Extension programs in Solid and Hazardous Waste Education are the envy of neighboring states.”
-- Dennis Schmitt, proprietor, Lindeman’s Cleaning, Green Bay
