Academic Staff Titles
Q. How can I find out my official academic
staff title?
A. You can ask your immediate supervisor, check your pay stub,
or look at your reappointment letter to find out your official title
if you are not sure. You can also check online at http://www.uwex.edu/ces/dir/index.cfm,
the Cooperative Extension Staff Directory. Do a search for your name and you
will find both your official and working academic staff titles.
Q. What’s the difference between an official title
and a working title?
A. Academic staff members usually use working titles to describe
their day-to-day work. For example, an academic staff member with the
working title of “Basin Educator” has the official title
of "Lecturer." A “Nutrition Coordinator” has
the official title of “Associate Lecturer.” Though there is
some flexibility in naming or re-naming a working title upon hire, remember
that a title prefix review is based on your official title, not your
working title. So you’ll need to know your official academic staff
title.
Q. How are official titles determined?
A. Official titles are determined when a position description is written for a new vacancy. Positions that perform similar jobs are given similar
academic staff titles. These official titles fall into either Category
A for “professional” positions or Category B for “educational
or instructional” positions. Category A positions are positions of a professional or technical nature in which the primary job duties are in support of the educational enterprise. For example, a media specialist helps to prepare materials or technologies used to conduct educational programs. Category B positions have teaching, development, or evaluation as their primary duties.
