Title Prefix Review Process: Category B

Q.  What is a Category “B” academic staff?
A.  Category “B” is an academic staff position that has an educational or instructional focus. These titles are used by Cooperative Extension for positions that have some responsibilities that are similar to those of faculty, but the positions are non-tenured. Following are the most common Category B titles used in Coop Extension. (For additional titles, see Unclassified Personnel Guideline #1, “Unclassified Titles,” at http://www.uwsa.edu/hr/upgs/upg.htm.)

  • Extension Associate
  • Lecturer

Q.  Why is the Extension Associate position not eligible for title prefix review?
A.  Extension Associate positions are hired into positions intended to be faculty positions. When a colleague is hired, he or she is given a maximum of five years to complete a master’s degree. At that time, the colleague is eligible to become a faculty member and start on the tenure track.

Q.  In Category B, what title prefixes are used?
A. Most title series are differentiated by one of three prefixes. The prefixes -- associate, no prefix, and senior -- reflect the successively greater experience, expertise, and applied ability and responsibility that are required of the position. Some title series have an "Assistant" prefix as the entry-level prefix.
